The Scout is a unisex satchel that is made to look good and last for generations. It has been made with the BIO principal: Buy it Once. Much attention to detail has been placed into this satchel with every piece being chosen and placed to maximise durability and longterm characterisation. The Scout has literally been designed to look better the longer you use it.
Vegetable tanned leathers are at the top end of the leather market. They cost more because they take longer to make using traditional leather tanning methods. Instead of applying poisonous chemicals to "cure" the leather, vegetable tanning methods use tannins found naturally in plants to bond with the proteins in the leather and preserve the skin for generations.
The uniqueness of this bag is summed up in the leather, brass and waxed canvas. All three materials are rarely found together but when done well, they create something special.
The brass is solid and weighty and yours to either keep polished or let it brown off with character to match the other materials.
Scout shown here with the optional Cameron Leather Sling.
Waxed canvas is a broad weave, heavy cotton canvas that has been soaked in a beeswax solution to make it waterproof yet breathable. It’s not new, it’s been used for centuries by sailors to waterproof their sails. Learn more here
The waxed canvas is quite stiff initially but it will soften over time and eventually develop an aged patina similar to leather. To maintain the water resistance of the bag you can apply Granddad Jack's Sack Wax annually or as required.
The satchel is beautifully crafted. It was a gift for my husband and he loves it!
Bought this bag 3 months ago so it is still fairly early days as I intend on using it for quite some time, but it does the job very nicely. I work as a sales rep so this bag is basically my office in a lot of respects. I went through a couple of bags and was never really quite happy as I am a big fan of traditional materials and the synthetic bags I was using didn’t look the part for me, nor stand up to the abuse of being thrown in and out of a car about 10 times a day, sliding around in ute trays on job sites and carrying all the stuff I need to do my job. In it I carry all the essentials I need such as phone, keys, IPad, 2 phones, site ID cards, knife, torch, charger bank, wifi dongle, wallet, keys and all the charger cables/accessories needed for all the above! The small pockets make it easy to organise all the smaller stuff, I stopped using the zipper very early on but opened up it doesn’t get in the way at all. After all that use it just went through its first leather and brass polish, got to figure out where I put my button stick or make up some form of blanking plate so I can keep the brasso off the leather but it looks lovely now that all the brass and the leather is sparkling.
Been looking for a while for a men's bag to keep my wallet, phone, glasses and stuff in - that is stylish, not too bulky, but still very masculine. Eventually found the Jack Stillman range online and bought the Scout Satchel. Perfect combination of right size, practical and looks great. The leather flap has a great weight and thickness and a beautiful depth of colour, that just gets better over time, especially with a bit of leather conditioner. Absolutely love it and I get a lot of compliments from both men and women. Only issue was the little knob that the strap fits on fell off - it screws on but has a tendency to come loose. This might be something that could be improved, but otherwise I can't fault it. Looking forward to seeing it age and develop character. I would love to see a version of the Scout in all leather in the same leather as the flap - I know it would be more expensive, but it would look great and I would certainly buy that as well - I could give my existing Scout to one of my sons! Michael
Thank you so much for taking the time to give me such comprehensive feedback Michael. I am really thrilled to hear you like the aesthetic of the Scout so much. It's one of my favourite bags. Very sorry to hear about the brass button coming loose. It's solid brass and threaded so some Loctite or similar will lock it down when you screw it back into place. Please let us know if we can help with this. Re making a version in leather, hopefully one day I can make a version in a mycelium grown leather. I am working to reduce the amount of animal leather and replace it with a natural animal free product. Watch this space. JS
Wow first day it was raining . Went for a ride nothing got wet it was prefect
I couldn't be happier! I cannot wait to see the patina on this bag in the years to come. I constantly get compliments on how nice the bag is and enjoy telling the story behind it, the excellent customer service, and so very proud to support a business with great vision.
